| September 29, 2009 Contract Awarded for Highway 97 Asphalt Surfacing Project SALMON ARM – A $2,803,621 paving project is about to begin, providing residents between Falkland Bridge and Pinaus Lake Road with a safer, smoother road. “I’m really happy this contract has been awarded to a local contractor,” says Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger. “This project will create jobs, improve road safety and extend the life of Highway 97.” “This stretch of Highway 97 is used by residents and the forest industry,” says Shuswap MLA George Abbott. “With residential and industrial traffic sharing the same road, it is essential that upgrades are made to ensure that rural roads and highways are as safe as possible for all drivers.” Paving will reinforce and strengthen the road, reducing maintenance costs by preventing water infiltration. The road surface will be widened to include two metre-wide paved shoulders, as well as upgrades to the railways crossing. This contract awarded to Dawson Construction Limited, will be completed in November. While single alternating traffic operation between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. is anticipated for the majority of the work, one night-time full closure at the Kelowna Pacific Railway crossing north of Falkland is expected to occur. Exact details of traffic detour routes and times will be announced in October. The project is funded under the Province’s three-year, $14-billion capital infrastructure program that will create up to 88,000 jobs and help build vital public infrastructure in every region of B.C. -30- | |
